Otterville RC Raceway Season Opener

Otterville RC Raceway has been around for several years and the owner John Blakley takes a lot of pride in his track and he puts a lot of work into it each week. Like many outdoor RC tracks, Otterville is a low dust track with high grip thanks to some special solutions of linseed oil and horse manure to all but eliminate the dust and to provide a huge amount of grip.

By most measures, Otterville is a world class track with new layouts every couple years and a top notch drivers stand, PA system, live timing screens so everyone in the paddock area can watch the action and see what’s going on. The track even has a lighting system set up so that drivers can practice well after sunset on Friday night before the races the next day.

What helps make Otterville so special isn’t just the extremely friendly owner and his family, but it’s also it’s members. They are a fun loving group who are extremely helpful when someone needs assistance and very welcoming to newcomers. If you have questions, don’t be shy…just walk up to someone and ask them. If they don’t know the answer, they will point you in the right direction. Unlike some other tracks, they and they owner, haven’t forgotten what it’s like to be a newbie. Whereas at other venues, the head honchos just expect you to know everything by the time you show up.

With Covid-19 still casting a cloud over motorsports in Ontario, drivers have been very eager to get back to racing. Fortunately, restrictions lifted just enough to allow for a limited number to attend for three days for three separate race events as a triple header. Not all drivers attended all three days though; as a triple header, racers could pick which days suited their schedule. Some drivers did indeed camp out and attend all three days, although Sunday had very few participants (not enough to put on a proper race program) so it became just a track day for practice.

The next race with be the huge “Nitro Blast” which is an annual event held over three days with over 200 racers in attendance. It becomes so large that a nearby farm is used as overflow for RV’s, camping trailers, and extra paddock space. Needless to say, everyone is looking forward to the next one. The video below is from this most recent event and just a sample of what is to come at the Nitro Blast.
